Known as the epicenter of the ancient Maya world, Belize once was home to more than 2 million Mayas. Sacred temples, pyramids, advanced science, agriculture, mathematics, palaces, and awesome structures are their legacy.
Maya
civilization is embedded throughout the country and ruins can be found all
over. Only a small fraction have been unearthed and are open to the public.
Among the most popular places to visit are: Xunantunich, Altun Ha, Caracol,
Cahal Pech and Lamanai. Visit these places and take a step into history,
experience the awesomeness of these incredible structures & enrich your
minds as you learn about the Mayans way of life.
One other incredible Mayan site, and our personal favorite adventure, is
the ATM Cave. Actun Tunichil Muknal, or the “Cave of the Stone Sepulcher”,
will be one of the most enlightening, epic, and unforgettable experiences of
your life. Leave the world of the living behind as you venture into the
heart of the ATM Cave hiking and swimming through water and ducking and
climbing around boulders. It is not only beautiful geologically, with its
crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, but also historically, as is a natural
museum of ancient Mayan artifacts, and a sacred burial place. This is the
final resting place of the “Crystal Maiden”, an ancient Mayan ceremonial
victim, as well as the remains of 13 other sacrificed men, women, and children. We encourage you to plan this trip before you arrive, there are only a
select few guides who have permission to give tours here and there is a limit
on the amount of people who may go through at a time.
